This part of Budapest called Erzsebetvaros (Elisabeth's town) after Queen Elisabeth, became an important commercial and trade town in the medieval times. By the 18th century it attracted hundreds of Jewish families also, from all over Europe to make a living and eventually settle here. By the 19th century one quarter of the population of the area was Jewish - with a strong Hungarian patriotic attitude. They established the Neologue Jewish Community, the movement that dominates the Hungarian Jewish religion even today. The community played a very important role in the development of the Hungarian capital and its members became outstanding figures of the Hungarian political, cultural, educational, sport and scientific life.
After learning about the Dohany synagogue, the Holocaust Cemetery and the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Park with the Wheeping Willow Memorial Tree, the tour continues with a walk in the Jewish district and the visit of the beautiful Moorish style Rumbach Synagogue. Learn about the dark part of the history when this territory of Budapest became the ghetto and thousands of people have died here. During the walk you can learn about Jewish memorials, experience the unique, special atmosphere of this multicultural district of Budapest. While walking among the ruined or wounded and already renovated buildings you get to learn about the present day life of the Hungarian Jewry, the history of the Budapest Ghetto the Hungarian Holocaust and so much more. This is a stroll along narrow streets best explored with the help of a professional guide, expert in the Hungarian Jewish history and culture.
